After narrowly beating a bad Towson team, the sky is falling here at UD FlyerNation. Tim tells you what it will take for the Flyers to get an at-large bid, Secaur compares Marcus Johnson to Jim Furyk, and we both speculate on the return of Rob Lowery. Plus much much more...

ReplyDeleteFuryk at his best
Marcus has always had that Furyk-ness to his jumper, but his shot has gotten better every year until now. Perimeter shooting is always a streak thing for everyone, but what concerns me most about him is that he's bricking the bread and butter 15 foot pull up jumper. I bet he made that 65% of the time the last two years.
ReplyDelete@Adam: First of all, thank you for listening. You and my parents might be the only 3 people who actually hear this thing.
ReplyDeleteYou hit it, though. That's the point I was trying to make in the podcast. It was never a pretty jumper but it went in enough that you didn't let it worry you. That's not the case anymore.
You know what else bothers me? 8-19 for a whopping 42% from the foul line.
It's like the Blackburn Review over here without the humor. All negative, all the time. 22-8? 21-9? You guys can't be serious. I realize being the contrarian is the new "in" thing, but this is another level. Tim, what happened? I thought you were the half-full contributor.
ReplyDeleteI understand the Flyer guards continue to defend poorly on the perimeter which has hindered the defensive rebounding, but I believe there is some reason to be optimistic.
A) The offense is better than last year's.
B) The team is comprised of the same players as last year with the exception of Charles Little, and last year's team was generally considered to be a good defensive team.
C) The Flyers have shown they can defend at a high level as demonstrated in each of the comebacks this year.
D) As far as I know, none of the remaining opponents can boast a backcourt comparable to Nova's or K-State's (maybe Richmond).
So what's the difference this season? I think it is a matter of effort, and effort can be addressed in-season. Play with better effort on defense, and this team is significantly better than last year's version. If BG doesn't find a way to inspire the defensive play, your grim predictions may be correct .
Speaking of Chuck Little, I think we really are missing him BIG time. Dude was a bull, and he got to the rim whenever he wanted. And he actually did what people claim Huelsman does, clearing dudes out and making rebounding easier for his team. I'll never forget Martelli's quote about Chuck. He was asked what was the difference in the game last year and he said: "We don't have a Charles Little."
ReplyDeleteWe really miss that muscle, that "Get out of my way or you might die" attitude. Wright's the closest we have, but he's too cute with the ball.
Hard to be Optimistic when you are thoroughly dominated by a poor Towson team for 30 of 40 minutes. Don't fall behind by double digits tonight, beat Miami, and some of my optimism will return.
ReplyDelete@Opto: You're dead right about K-State's and Nova's backcourt. The problem is there are no quality wins left on the schedule (outside of XU and maybe New Mex), so I guess that's why my predictions are so grim.
Chuck Little filled the role of zone buster quite well for the Flyers in his career and we miss that as much as the physicality. Little would flash to the post and drive the ball right through the middle of the zone. Have we seen that at all this year?
ReplyDeleteI want to be optimistic, I really do, look down the schedule though.
ReplyDeleteLet's examine this 22-8, specifically the 8.
We have 2 losses right now. Do you think we can run the non-con with only 1 more loss? I think a lot of folks see this team losing 2 more games. @new mex and any combo of Miami/@ Mason/ODU.
12-4 would be a VERY good conference record for this team considering how we play on the road.
Then, outside of collecting a banner in AC, there's one more loss there.
That's an easy 8 - God, I hope I'm wrong.
Regarding the negative Nancy going on. I don't crap on my Flyers. I don't hate on players and I don't think it's cool when we lose. I love the Flyers and want them to win bad. Opto, I think you hit the effort thing right on but unless that changes this team is NIT bound.
